PREPARATION CHECKLIST FOR AN OUTDOOR FAMILY PHOTO SESSION

Planning for a family photo session is exciting, but let’s be honest, it can feel a little stressful too. Between picking outfits, keeping the kids happy, and hoping the weather behaves, there’s a lot to think about! The good news is that a little bit of preparation goes a long way in making your session smooth and enjoyable. To help take the guesswork out of it, I’ve gathered together my favourite tips on how to get ready and what to bring along so you can focus on having fun and making memories together.

Weather: Expect the unexpected
In this country it's never really a certain of how the weather will pan out, therefore prepare for the unexpected - pack a light rain jacket and an umbrella just in case. It doesn't take up much space.
The night before
Choose any outfits the night before and lay them out for the whole family, easily accessible for the next morning. It's also a good idea to get the kids involved so they get excited for the day.
Touch-up items
A pocket mirror, lipstick/lip balm, hairbrush, hair ties and clips will prove very handy for windier days. As will tissues and wipes for mucky hands or runny noses. SPF and insect repellent for hotter days.
Outfits/Spares
For younger kids, bring along a spare set of clothes in case of accidents and also an extra layer or two for unexpected weather changes. Avoid busy patterns, logos, or very bright colours as they can prove distracting. More in depth outfit advice here.
Comfort toys for young kids
For younger kids bring along their 'can't do without' items (that you perhaps have 2 of) whether that's a comfort blanket or favourite toy just for reassurance on the day. I would avoid screens as they will be more hindrance than help.
Snacks
Without a doubt, bring quick, mess-free snacks (think little biscuits or fruit snacks) and water bottles to keep everyone happy, primarily toddlers and younger children.
Picnic blanket
I always ask clients to bring along a blanket for sitting/lying down shots if the ground is a little damp. It's also good for younger children who are for eg learning to walk or crawling plus, adds some variety to your images
Accessorize!
It's slightly trickier to opt for a completely different outfit outdoors so instead, choose 2 or 3 different items to accessorize such as a hat, scarf or item of jewellery to vary your pictures and outfit.

TIP - Sunglasses are better on the top of your head than covering your eyes!

TIP - Put any mobile phones into bags and not trouser pockets. It can ruin a great photo!
