RELAXED AND INFORMAL OUTDOOR FAMILY PHOTO SESSIONS

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER

Before you even decide I'm the photographer for your family, ideally we'll have an informal chat and introductory conversation and discuss what ideas you have in mind for your photo session in Edinburgh and it's surrounding areas. Think about what you ultimately want to achieve from your family photography experience. This may include the type of shots you hope to display in your home - for eg that will determine how I will shoot on the day.

Ask me all the questions you may have and get answers there and then. It also gives me the chance to get to know you a little better and your family quirks! This first connection call is undoubtedly the best way to discover if we are the right fit. This is so important because ultimately if you feel comfortable and relaxed, you'll get the best photographs.

SETTING THE PACE

It's fun for all the family with many a giggle along the way. A secret - I never have a plan.... I very much go by how your family interact with each other and let things unfold naturally. Let's face it, your children are usually the ones I work around. For example if they show themselves to be very comfortable in front of a camera, the session may kick off with a series of images of them on their own or with siblings. If they appear more cautious then a family group image may be the better way to get things going.

TURNING FROWNS INTO SMILES

Children are certainly more engaged in outdoor locations and there's more chance to capture those 'living in the moment' style of shots if there's lots of space to run around. This reduces the chances of a total meltdown. These will still happen but I've a few things up my sleeve to pacify moments like this. A simple game of hide and seek for younger children usually results in some winning smiles and reactions. Another good one - I tell them to answer any question with the word 'sausages'...or tell them not to smile at all, because this is a very serious occasion and there is no smiling allowed. Almost always results in uncontrollable outbursts of laughter.

NO AWKWARD POSING

Oh, and don't worry too much about feeling awkward - that's what I'm here to help you with. You'll get some gentle direction from me, for example putting hands in pockets, or an arm around someone. I can demonstrate! I like to get a range of naturally posed shots in amongst the candid ones where possible, providing a good mix of images.

Above all, be yourselves like you would on any other outdoor walk or family day out.
