RSPB Loch Leven

Updated: Aug 13, 2019

We had a brilliant day out with the children at this RSPB reserve, just around an hour's drive from Edinburgh. Hubbie well into his birds so we thought we'd introduce them to a bit of hide action! There were some picturesque trails to wander along and lots of wildlife to spot in amongst the incredibly rich wild flower meadows. Eva and Douglas had a shot at building their own bug hotel in a specially dedicated area. We visited the hides along the loch side and managed to spot some geese and ducks. They could only take so much of the need to be quiet for so long however... To let the serious bird watchers carry out their hobby in peace we left and had lunch at the little cafe where there were plenty of outdoor seats and Eva got the chance to make her own butterfly feeder. Once our bellies were full it was time for a gentle bike ride along the shores of the loch. All in all a successful trip. They were asleep before we barely left the car park. https://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves-and-events/reserves-a-z/loch-leven/

There are some lovely nature trails, perfect for shorter legs.

The wildflower meadows were simply teaming with bees and insects. Great to see!

Lots of opportunities to discover the local pond life.

A first look through the windows of the hides. Binoculars at the ready!

A chance for children to get creative!
